Altmaier in the German EEG dialogue: Biogas must serve as balancing energy in the future (Germany)

Peter Altmaier (CDU), the federal minister of environment, has stressed the future meaning of biogas as an answer to the generating of energy by the fluctuating solar and wind energy. “Biogas has bright prospects for the future role as balancing energy”, he said on the sidelines of the EEG dialogue in Berlin last week.  This was the only way to justify that the costs of the generation of energy from biogas burden the EEG apportionment above average meanwhile. In Europe, there were 12,200 biogas plants in 2011 with an installed capacity of 5400 Mwel and an electricity production of around 41 TWh.  This was reported by Arthur Wellinger, President of the European Biogas Association (EBA) on the biogas conference in Leipzig at the end of January.
