Bio natural gas could already replace 10% of natural gas consumption

According to estimates by the Renewable Resources Agency (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe or FNR), 10% of natural gas consumption in Germany can already be replaced with bio natural gas. The FNR explained that about 15 billion cubic metres of biogas and biogenic waste gases were produced from the municipal collection of organic waste in 2013. In theory, 9 billion cubic metres of bio natural gas, which is identical to natural gas, could be obtained from this. This compares with natural gas consumption of about 87 billion cubic metres, of which just under 90% is provided by imports.
