Cereal GPS in biogas plants


Within cultivation of energy plants the use of winter cereals like rye, triticale and wheat are increasingly gaining in significance and is an alternative to intensive maize cultivation. Forms of utilisation are forage rye or whole plants of the cereal. Due to enormous breeding progresses high yields of dry mass per hectare have been reached especially with rye.

What sounds easy for agricultural production can be a challenge for operators of biogas plants. Substances like glucane are the reason for this, which leads to mucilage and thus in a significant decline in flow and stirring characteristics of the fermentations content. This is especially known for rye and triticale. Therefore leading plant constructors recommend to limit the proportion of rye or triticale whole crop silage in the substrate mix  to 25–30%.

MT-Energie GmbH and DSM have developed a method to significantly use more cereal GPS in biogas plants. This is made possible through the new enzyme product Axiase™ 100.  Similar to ethanol production the specific enzyme preparation improves viscosity and flowability in the fermenter. The development Axiase™ 100 supports in particular that whole crop silage from rye or triticale can be feeded in significant higher amounts.
