When the fermenter foams


The formation of foam is a dreaded phenomenon in the production of biogas. This is because the foam can not only lift the gas storage foil and tear it off, but may also penetrate the gas ducts. Plant operators watch for the occurrence of foam when using sugar beets or green rye, for example. A research team led by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) wishes to find a remedy however: scientists have developed a rapid test for plant operators. This so-called Leipzig foam test should help prevent failures and damages.
